چکیده

In most cases, a surface is not ideally smooth. It rather contains regular and irregular dents, bumps and other textures that influence the reflection of the incident wave. A reflection on such a corrugated surface causes a frequency-dependent redirection of the incident sound energy outside the specular direction, called scattering. While the computation of the specular part is well elaborated today, a model that thoroughly captures the wave phenomenon of scattering is still under discussion. Here, the most common assumption is that scattered energy follows a uniform Lambert distribution, which has proven to be a good approximation, especially in room acoustical applications. In this contribution, we will discuss Lambert-based scattering models (specular/diffuse sound field decomposition and vector mixing) and their implementations in methods of Geometrical Acoustics. We will analyze benefits and flaws of the respective models and investigate possibilities to introduce angledependent scattering for use cases where the uniform Lambertian distribution becomes invalid.

Issues for computer modelling of room acoustics in non-concert hall settings

The basic principle of common room acoustics computer models is the energy-based geometrical room acoustics theory. The energy-based calculation relies on the averaging effect provided when there are many reflections from many different directions, which is well suited for large concert halls at medium and high frequencies. In recent years computer modelling has become an established tool in ar...

Boundary Conditions for Room Acoustic Simulations

Research on room acoustic simulation focuses on more accurate modeling of wave effects in rooms. Today, also wave models (e.g., the boundary element method and the finite differences in time domain technique) can be used for higher frequencies, thus, in the geometrical acoustics (GA) domain. Simulations in architectural acoustics are powerful tools but their reliability depends on the input dat...

Computer Modelling and Auralisation of Sound Fields in Rooms - an Overview –

The subject of room simulation attracted the attention for the last few decades. Methods for acoustic simulation of rooms have been developed for purposes of analysis, design, and virtual performance. Geometrical-acoustics based methods, the mirror-image method and the ray-tracing method, have been mainly used. In this paper, the application of diffusion in room acoustics computer models is dis...

Architectural Acoustics: New Frontiers in Room Acoustical Modeling I

Geometrical-acoustics GA modeling techniques assume that surfaces are large relative to the wavelengths of interest. For a given scenario, practitioners typically create a single 3D model with large, flat surfaces that satisfy the assumption over a broad range of frequencies. Such geometric approximations lead to errors in the spatial distribution of the simulated sound field because geometric ...

Session 3pPAb: General Physical Acoustics II 3pPAb3. Influence of reflecting walls on edge diffraction simulation in geometrical acoustics

Edge diffraction can be introduced into Geometrical Acoustics mainly by three models: detour-based, energetic and wave-based diffraction models. In the past, we thoroughly compared Maekawa's detour law, the uncertainty relation based diffraction method and the secondary source model by the example of edge diffraction of a single wedge. However, the influence of the wedge shape has not yet been ...
